Living so close to the Pacific Ocean in San Diego area, up on the mountain in Mount Laguna, we had 3 feet of snow in the recent storm that crippled the USA. It was then I was watching the snowflakes fall while snug at home and heard them swirling in a waltz rhythm. It is an easy song, one that is good for beginners.

Unmodified recording soon after XC760654 made from car on the unpaved road that parallels the beach on the western side of the peninsula, motor turned off. Flock was comprised of approximately 100 Snow Buntings that foraged (and, at least in one case, bathed) briefly on the wide flat beach with shallow water pools before taking off again, flying in a swirl and relanding in a slightly different location. There did not seem to be a net movement in any particular direction. Flock seemed to be homogenous with regard to species. This recording has more discrete notes, which I interpret as non-flight calls, though they may simply be flight calls of near birds. Most of the birds were in nonbreeding plumage, with a few exceptions. The harsh calls were made during the short flights. Temp. in 50's F, partly sunny, wind fairly calm.
