Boyz II Men, Evolution Full ((BETTER)) Album 91

Boyz II Men's Evolution: A Review of Their Fourth Studio Album

Boyz II Men, the R&B quartet that dominated the charts in the early 90s with their smooth harmonies and soulful ballads, released their fourth studio album, Evolution, in September 1997. The album was their final one under Motown Records, and also had a Spanish language version, EvoluciÃn, which won the Billboard Latin Music Award for Pop Album of the Year by a New Artist. [^2^]

Evolution was a highly anticipated album, as Boyz II Men had sold almost 30 million copies worldwide with their previous two albums, Cooleyhighharmony and II. The group worked with their regular collaborators, such as Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Sean "Diddy" Combs, to create a mix of R&B, soul, pop and hip hop soul songs. They also appeared on various talk shows and signed copies of the album at the Virgin Megastore in New York City on the day of its release. [^2^]

The album debuted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the R&B Album Charts, with 215,000 copies sold in its first week. However, it quickly fell down the charts and only sold two million copies in the US and four million copies worldwide, a disappointment compared to their previous successes. Evolution also received mixed reviews from critics, who felt that Boyz II Men's signature sound was becoming formulaic and lacked innovation. [^2^]

The album spawned four singles: "4 Seasons of Loneliness", "A Song for Mama", "Can't Let Her Go" and "Doin' Just Fine". The first single, "4 Seasons of Loneliness", was released on September 8, 1997, and became Boyz II Men's fifth and last number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became their sixth platinum single in the US. The second single, "A Song for Mama", was released on November 25, 1997, and reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the R&B Singles Chart. It was also featured on the soundtrack of the movie Soul Food. The third single, "Can't Let Her Go", was released on March 20, 1998, and peaked at number eight on the R&B Singles Chart and number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. The fourth single, "Doin' Just Fine", was released on July 28, 1998, and reached number nine on the R&B Singles Chart and number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100. [^1^] [^2^]

Evolution is an album that showcases Boyz II Men's vocal talents and emotional delivery, but also reveals their need to evolve their musical style and explore new directions. It is a testament to their legacy as one of the most successful R&B groups of all time, but also a sign of their decline in popularity and relevance in the late 90s.

Despite the lukewarm reception of Evolution, Boyz II Men did not give up on their musical career. They left Motown Records and signed with Universal Records in 1999, hoping to regain their creative freedom and artistic control. They released their fifth studio album, Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya, in 2000, which was entirely written and produced by the group members themselves. The album received positive reviews from critics, who praised Boyz II Men's maturity and experimentation with different genres and sounds. However, the album failed to achieve commercial success, selling only 500,000 copies in the US and one million copies worldwide.

Boyz II Men continued to release albums throughout the 2000s and 2010s, such as Full Circle (2002), Throwback (2004), The Remedy (2006), Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA (2007), Love (2009), Twenty (2011) and Collide (2014). They also collaborated with various artists, such as Mariah Carey, Brian McKnight, Justin Bieber, Charlie Wilson and Babyface. They also ventured into other projects, such as acting, hosting radio shows, performing on Broadway and Las Vegas residencies.

Boyz II Men are still active today, with three of the original members: Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman. Michael McCary left the group in 2003 due to health issues. The group has s
